Living Room Furniture - Finding Your Style

Living room furniture means different things for different families. Some prefer the sleek, understated look of contemporary styles, while some enjoy the plush comfort of shabby chic.

But, no matter what your style, you need to find living room furniture that reflects it. This is the room that you and your family will spend the most time in; here, you will have to be comfortable and stylish, letting the two blend together in a way that is representative of you.

But how do you do that? How do you use living room furniture to make the perfect living room?

One: decide your style. You need to find something that says "you". This doesn't just end with you bedroom; your living room furnishings should speak of your interests and tastes. You want guests to know what you like by what they see.

Two: measure your room. The worst mistake you can make is purchasing living room furniture before taking the dimensions of the room. You will, more often than not, find yourself with pieces that don't fit.

To save yourself this aggravation, take time to measure the room. Then, you will know exactly how much space you have to work with and what kind of living room furniture will fit.

Three: finding furniture you can use. With so many choices out there, it is tempting to purchase more than you need. This becomes a problem with furniture, however.

You will be spending a great deal of time in this room; you don't want to stuff it with pieces you don't need or simple "look good". Instead, try to purchase things that serve more than one purpose--you know you will use them and they still reflect your taste.

Four: keep it together. Even if you enjoy many different kinds of funiture styles, caution should be used when deciding to mix them together in your living room. Many types of decor don't flow together (contemporary with victorian, for example). Just because you like them doesn't mean they match.

Try to choose living room furniture that fits together for, while you may appreciate different types, you don't want one to clash with the other. This will simply ruin both styles. Keep it uniformed.

Five: it's all in the accessories. Your living room furniture will make statements of what styles you appreciate and enjoy. You can't simply leave a room with just furniture, however. You need to enhance it with accessories and wall colors.

Your living room furniture needs to be surrounded by things that match it. For example, if you are going for a victorian approach, using extras like books or candelabrums will add to the effect.

Your living room furniture should be comfortable and practical; you want to be able to actually use it. Unless you are one of the fortunate few who can have more than one living room (one for show and one for regular usage), you need to learn how to strike the right balance of elegance and practicality.
