Household Cleaning Tips – Some Dirty Little Secrets

by HDME Staff

Looking for easy-to-implement household cleaning tips? Among the various responsibilities that are necessary in keeping a pleasant home – and yet one that is least enjoyable for most people – is cleaning. It is dull, tedious, dirty, frustrating, and time consuming.

This situation only worsens when clutter has built, things have not been put away, and when parts of it have messes have been allowed to accumulate – as so often happens in life. With all of the other responsibilities that we have in our busy lives, household cleaning can become a real problem.

Although we would all like our homes to be perfectly clean every day, very few of us have the kind of time that it takes to actually maintain a spotless space.

Not everybody can afford to have a cleaning service come into their homes every week or two, but this shouldn’t mean that without the additional assistance, we should have to live in a very messy home. With a little bit of patience and the right household cleaning tips and tricks, you can still achieve a properly cleaned home without having to spend hours every day on its maintenance.

Use the following household cleaning tips to help you to get through the battle with a messy home and come out victorious:

  • Among the top household cleaning tips is to create a household cleaning schedule. By forming a schedule for the various cleaning tasks that have to be completed, you will be able to make a habit of them, instead of putting them off and then having to face them when they have built up to the point of being a real nuisance.

For example, if you wash towels on Tuesdays, then you will simply get it done instead of waiting until there is a tremendous laundry buildup and it seems overwhelming. Similarly, if you vacuum every Saturday, over time you’ll just build it into the day and get it done before doing all of the other things you do on Saturdays.

Make sure that you’re not the only one in the family who has scheduled responsibilities. By dividing the tasks, things will move along much more smoothly. By adding a checklist to your schedule, you’ll make sure nothing is missed.

  • Remove distractions. When you know that it’s time to face a cleaning task, don’t let yourself become distracted. To help with this, remove distractions from your environment. Shut off your cell phone, turn off the television, and stay away from your computer. You can, however, add music to help to pass the time while you clean. When you play something upbeat that you truly like, you’ll be surprised at how fast the time can pass.

  • Before cleaning, walk through the house. As you go, pick up things that can be put away, and have a look at the areas that need the most attention. Then you will know where your energies will be most required. If you do these little walkthroughs regularly, you’ll keep on top of a lot of messes and clutter and will keep them from building up beyond the point where they can be quickly cleaned up.

By using these simple household cleaning tips and strategies, you can stay on top of your cleaning, spend as little time doing it, and make it as easy as possible on yourself and your family.

Chores
by: MLsmith

We all help with chores. I know that my wife could not do this all alone. I am glad to see this article on household cleaning tips say that everyone should help out because I know families who think it is cruel to make kids to chores.

Good household cleaning tips
by: Alley

We have started to clean a bit each day after dinner and have almost eliminated the traditional "Saturday" day of cleaning. Now we can actually have a day off on Saturday without having to worry about the house being in a total mess.

The schedule and music works for me
by: Kayla

I always work with fast paced music on when I clean as it helps me get the job done twice as fast and keeps my mind off the mundane tasks. I also divide the chores by the day of the week. Monday is laundry day, Tuesday is bathrooms, etc. This system helps me remember what needs to be done as well.

Family Cooperation
by: Evelyn

We have worked things out in our family so that it is very easy to keep our home neat and clean. Each morning each person has a single job to do outside of their bedroom. It takes us about 15 to 20 minutes and everything is neat and ready for the day.

Music to clean by
by: Lydia

I guess I am lucky to have a small place as cleaning isn't a major chore, but I do like to have music playing when I do it. I find something up to date with a good, uptempo beat works best as it makes me go faster. (That could be because I want it to end of course!)

Great article!
by: OneTwin

I loved reading these household cleaning tips, it's just so logical and so much common sense. I know that I'm easily distracted but as there are no kids in our household I don't usually have too much mess to clear up.

The schedule works
by: RuthAnn

My family and I started a schedule for all of us about a year ago and it works great. I can't believe how much more free time I have. Everything gets done twice as fast with more hands on the job.

Wonderful Household Cleaning Tips
by: Irene D

We have scheduled chores that the whole family follow. It's great to be able to do things a bit at a time instead of all at once. None of us has a lot of time at our disposal so little spurts of cleaning make for a great way to keep things relatively clean.

Distraction is my biggest problem
by: Sandy

I clean every Saturday, but the household cleaning tips about not getting distracted is all too true for me. As I am cleaning, when I walk past the computer it's like the thing is calling to me. Before I know it, I could have had two rooms cleaned and I'm sitting there playing solitaire or just generally wasting time.

Awesome household cleaning tips!
by: Misty

I have started to take a laundry basket around with me each night. I toss the things in the basket that are out of place. I find that this makes me weekend cleaning go a lot quicker. I also wipe down the bathrooms every week during the week and then a full cleaning on the weekend.

Not going it alone
by: Tori

I totally agree with the division of labor concept. If the household member is able to walk and talk they are able to help out in my house.

Cleaning story
by: Dad@Home

Good household cleaning tips there, thanks. It is a challenge to keep a home clean and not just surface tidy. Especially when you have small children to care for as well.

With a background in health and safety I tend to concentrate on keeping major areas free of hazards (both physical and dirt wise). But it is hard to do more until bedtime for my kids.

Apart from taking time away from them I resist adding chemicals into the air when they are around.

I am sure when they are older the household chore plan will be adopted.
