Home Office Setup Ideas

by HDME Staff

Looking for home office setup advice? At one time all people working for a business went to work in that office in the morning and came home at night. This has changed for many over the years with a number of people doing their work in a home office setup. Some run their own business from this location, others do work at home for a specific company.

When working from the home it is important to have a location set aside for this specific purpose. It is not practical to try to accomplish anything professional by trying to work on a dining room table or some other inappropriate place. In such a case one often finds files or other important documents misplaced or lost.

Having a special room designated for this purpose is ideal. Even a place such as a walk-in closet can be utilized for a home office setup, although one would have to leave the door open for air and not suffer from claustrophobia. In any case, a special area must be reserved for this important activity.

In a very small home, where there simply is no appropriate space for a home office setup, some have converted an area in their garage for this purpose. This is very easy to do by anyone who is handy with a hammer and nails. Purchasing two by fours and sheetrock, it is not difficult to section off an area that will contain all the needed office equipment in a place where one can have the peace and quiet to do their work.

After putting in the walls, a nice carpet will keep one's feet from contacting cold from the concrete floor. It is preferably to put down a sheet of concrete barrier plastic, then padding and then the carpet. This will prevent any moisture from seeping through and causing stains and mold.

If one is fortunate enough to have a home with large rooms, rearranging furniture in a bedroom or other out of the way location can often provide enough space to conduct one's business. The important thing about any home office setup is to have enough space for a desk, computer, file cabinet and any other necessities of the job. Being able to remove one from ordinary household interruptions, when doing important work, is essential to produce good work and have peace of mind.

For such a home office setup to work efficiently it is important that one have the equipment that will fulfill all the requirements of the job. It may include such things as a fax machine, intercom, computer, printer and other items connected with business ventures. Having this in a special place, exclusively for this purpose, is paramount to having a successful home office.

Nice Ideas!
by: Mara

Thanks a lot for the home office setup ideas! I do accounting at home and I really need my own space. It does help quite a bit if you can go somewhere quiet so you can think without everyone disturbing you. That door seems to make all of the difference with my family. If the door is closed, I'm working, and they don't bother me. Thanks again!

Nice Thoughts
by: Gwenlyn

I need an office to work in while I'm home. I do transcription at home as a home based business and I need somewhere I can go to shut myself off from the rest of the household in order to prevent distractions. I don't have children at home to worry about during the week but during the summer and on weekends if I need to catch up, I really need that space to myself. Thanks for the home office setup ideas.

For tax reasons you have to have your own home office set-up that is only used for business. There are some great tips here. You should have your own space set-up so you can get more work done. I have my office in the basement.

Arizona room
by: Kelly

I have my home office setup in the Arizona room. It's kind of off the beaten path from the rest of the house which is good for the peace and quiet I need.

I have always wanted and office. My husband and I have talked about setting one up but never got around to it. We have a spot in the basement that just might work. Great tips in this one.

Need to make a change
by: Betty

I actually have a den dedicated for my home office set up, but I have working out of the living room for almost a year now because it was more convenient for my one year old. A change is in the air though because I am sick of seeing my living room like this.

The den is a cozier room with a fireplace and some sunny windows so I think this fall I will be moving back in there. I'm looking forward to getting back to my big, spacious desk.

Home Office Setup Ideas - The Perfect Solution
by: Jewlya

I needed a space for an office and we had a long coat closet just off our living room. It already had shelves built in on both sides. My husband installed a fluorescent light and I painted it a light country blue. I love the folding doors. I can just fold them shut and hide my work when company comes.

I needed and office
by: zelda

I was told that I should have a home office set up. I always just used the den or family room or the nook in the kitchen. I was so surprised at how much more work I was able to get done once I had an office set up in my home.
