Halloween Decorating Ideas - Scary Good

by HDME Staff

There is no shortage of Halloween decorating ideas. Next to Christmas, Halloween is probably one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. It is a time for children and adults to dress up like their favorite type of monster and decorate homes to make them look scary.

This practice was originally introduced as a means of frightening off evil spirits that were allowed to walk the world of the living on this one night each year. Let's look at a few Halloween decorating ideas that will help anyone get into the spirit of the holiday.

If one is not planning to decorate the whole house or have a party, the entryway can be decorated in such a way that it makes it appear more spooky to anyone coming to the door as they trick or treat. Setting up a table with dried flowers in a vase and a jack-o-lantern, complete with a lit candle, makes a good start. One can also hang a few rubber bats and spiders around at different heights or even tie one to the door knob to spook the trick or treaters.

Red lights and black clothing are useful decorations at this time. This is especially true if the lights seem to flicker. Candles inside red candle holders are ideal.

Other Halloween decorating ideas inclue decorating the front porch if there is one. Many people choose to make a sort of scarecrow with straw wrapped in a man's clothing. Some even use a carved pumpkin for the head. Some have gone so far as to remove the bottom of the pumpkin so that it could be slipped over one's head and replaced the scarecrow with a live body during the hours when children are trick or treating.

This can make it possible to scare older kids that think they are too old to be taking part in Halloween activities. However, care should be exercised so that no small children are frightened too badly.

Some like to decorate their car with a pair of hands gripping the front bumper and a pair of shoes or boots hanging from the rear bumper. Another variation among various Halloween decorating ideas is to place a pair of cut off pants legs pointing into the car's grill with shoes attached so that it looks as if someone had been run over and went into the motor compartment.

Taking advantage of opportunities can also lead to different Halloween decorating ideas. One year, a billboard that featured a very large frog was decorated with a pair of pant legs and boots so that it looked like the frog ate someone.

Halloween Decorating Ideas - Pumpkin Carving
by: Jimmy

In my hometown there is a guy whose family put out at LEAST 200 carved pumpkins in their front yard. It's really great to go over and see all of them. They do a lot of different carvings on them and they also give out tons of treats.

Halloween decorating ideas - My scary trick
by: Ginny

My whole family love this holiday and we go all out to outdo ourselves each year. My favorite thing last time was the spooky music I set up in the porch. It was wired to trigger just before anyone rang the bell. Luckily despite the fright nobody ran away!

Oooohhh scary
by: AmberT

Our house is scary on Halloween! It's the best, the kids and I really do it up. We have at least 15 pumpkins all over and they are all carved. We have that cool thing in the yard that looks like someone is coming up from the ground. We hang out lights and play eerie music. It's just a fun time. I love decorating for Fall too, we use gourds, pumpkins, corn stalks too.

Fall is my favorite!
by: Kayla

I do love Halloween and the chance to goof off and play dress up with the kids. I am quite an elaborate pumpkin carver and I usually do about 10 or so each year. We always make the scarecrows with straw as well...what a blast!

I love doing this and it's great to get the kids involved. Mine like to help carving out the pumpkins and we always have a skeleton sitting in the porch. I'm going to use some of these fun Halloween decorating ideas this year.

Haunted House Halloween Decorating Ideas
by: Kelly

If I can, I'd like to set up my own home like a haunted house. The kids would have to go through a maze of bone chilling terror just to get some candy!!

Not so much Halloween
by: Betty

I decorate the whole house on October 1st every year, but it isn't so much for Halloween as it is for the fall season in general. I like to put up decorations that can stay up through Thanksgiving. Although now that I have a baby I might just get into more Halloween specific decorations in a few years. I just love fall - it's my favorite season!

Halloween is my favorite

We decorate for Halloween each year. We have tombstones painted with sayings on them in the front yard and bones sticking up in between them (to make it look like an old cemetery).

Love your Halloween decorating ideas on decorating the house and using a scarecrow.

I love Halloween
by: zelda

I live in a house on a hill, you must climb stairs to get up here. Last year we had a fog machine so the house looked like it was sitting in smoke and played creepy music. Music is always a great way to give people goose bumps.
